The European Union wants to see Ukraine as a bridge between the East and the West, Spanish Ambassador to Ukraine Jose Rodriguez Moyano has said at a roundtable.
"It's very important for the EU that Ukraine is developing as a stable, democratic and open country. The last election deminstrate that Ukraine can determine its own domestic policy without any external interference. Ukraine showed that it is developing as a European country, and later, when Ukraine walks this path until the end, it will demonstrate to everybody that it realizes its own policy independently. Ukraine has enormous potential to become a bridge between the East and the West, and to enhance access to European and Russian markets. But to do so, Ukraine needs to reach an internal political consensus. For us Ukraine remains an essential part of Europe, and its fate is linked to Europe," he said. Italian Ambassador to Ukraine Pietro Giovanni Donnici, in turn, said that that the signing of an agreement on a free trade zone with the EU would be a sign of significant progress in the implementation by Ukraine of its strategic goal of joining the EU. "And of course, we are talking about the prospects of Ukraine's membership in the EU," he emphasized.
