Amnesty International expressed concerns over so-called 'people's courts' rendered by the separatists in eastern part of Ukraine

"Rendering of a 'people's court' in the self-proclaimed 'Luhansk People's Republic' (LPR) on a par with a cruel treatment of captives and death penalties are an outrageous violation of the international humanitarian law," reads the organization's press release. Amnesty International issued a document aimed at the mobilization of supporters from all over the world to pressurize the separatist's republic. Under the international law, punishment of a person is possible only through passing of a judgment by a legally established court in compliance with all the standards of fair judicial procedures, Spokesman of Amnesty International in Ukraine Bohdan Ovcharuk said. According to him, separatists' administering of the people's justice is nothing more than an attempt to justify murders of people. Ruling and executing judgments by representatives of the self-proclaimed separatist republics might constitute crimes of war, reads the statement. The organization also urged armed groups controlling a part of Luhansk and Donetsk regions to restrain from further hearing of cases against people accused of committing crimes, as urged not to kill captives.
